Surroundings
Saltvik’s commune, located about 20 km north of Mariehamn, is known for its blue cliffs, golden fields, salty bays and fragrant flower meadows. Here in Saltvik we have fresh air, clean water, lots of birds and animals and beautiful lakes.

Kvarnbo Pensionat is located in the village of Kvarnbo, surrounded by peaceful nature. From our dining hall you can see one of Åland’s oldest churches, St. Mary church, of which oldest parts are dated to the 11th century. Concerts are organized regularly in the church, e.g. the annual Åland’s organ festival in June. On a bright day you can see the sea glistening in the bay of Kvarnbo viken.
Workshop
A workshop bricked in the 1930s with all the original belt-driven machines is situated next to Kvarnbo Pensionat. The oldest machines are from 1895. All the machines work and are in use to this day. In the workshop is also a smithy where blacksmith Olivia Sarling works, as well as numerous motorcycles and machines. Martin will be happy to give you a tour around the workshop.

In the scenic area of Kastelholm, five kilometres from Kvarnbo, golf-lovers can find two 18-holed courses as well as a restaurant and a golf store.

Kastelholm castle
The beautiful Kastelholm castle stands in Saltvik’s neighboring commune, Sund. In the summertime guided tours round the castle are offered every day. An open-air museum is located right next to the castle.
Museum and hiking trail
In the nearby Borgboda village is a small museum, Ida’s cottage. From there you can hike to the ancient hill fortress that is guarded by wooden sculptures carved in the ancient Nordic style.
The Viking market
Over a thousand years ago Kvarnbo was an important meeting place for the Vikings. Big excavations and archaeological discoveries have taken place near the pension.
The society Fibula organizes the annual Viking market in the village of Kvarnbo. At the market you can learn about the Viking lifestyle, taste food and drinks of the time, take part in games and competitions and go round the market stands where you can shop Viking-themed handicraft and other products. The market is gaining more popularity every year – the latest market gathered over ten thousand visitors.
Grocery store, bank and gas station
In downtown Godby, six kilometres from our house, there are two supermarkets, a post office, a bank, a pharmacy, a gas station, a cash machine, a recycling shop, a grill, hairdressing salons, a dental clinic and a sports centrum with a swimming hall and a gym.
Beach
The bay of Kvarnbo viken is only 200 meters walk away from our house. The beach has dressing rooms and a jetty. The guests of the pension enjoyed warm summer days at Kvarnboviken already back in the 1920s. The bay used to be a ship building site a century ago.
